The jewelry you see in the picture above is called labret and is intended for use in a lip piercing. The shape of the jewelry, however, makes it more suitable for an ear piercing.
In this case, this labret features a rectangular top. You can choose the bead size from three different options: 1/4", 3/8", or 1/2" (6, 9 or 12 mm). Usually, only regular round balls are seen in lip piercings, so this model is more suitable for an ear piercing. But, naturally, the decision is up to you. As long as the labret gauge matches that of your piercing hole, you can wear it wherever you like.

The post is internally threaded, which protects your piercing every time you take the jewelry in and out, as the thread is inside the post itself instead of being on the outside. Externally threaded posts may hurt or scratch your skin, but fortunately, this is not the case here ;)
