All About Lip Piercings

All You Need to Know About Madonna Piercing: Procedure, Jewelry, and Healing

A Madonna piercing is typically placed just above the upper lip just like a small beauty spot, on the right side.

This piercing is both simple and incredibly elegant, which most likely has contributed to its popularity today.

Madonna or Monroe piercing?

The only real difference between these two piercings is that a Monroe is placed on the left side as Marilyn Monroe’s beauty spot, and a Madonna is placed on the right side to mimic Madonna’s birthmark. That's all.

What jewelry can I use for a Madonna piercing?

For this type of piercing, most people use ordinary labrets.

Labrets have a flat plate on one of their ends, which is especially advantageous for lip piercings since they touch your gums and teeth. Labrets with a PTFE base are even gentler.

How is a Madonna piercing done?

A Madonna piercing is done in much the same way as any other lip piercing.

  • Start by finding a professional piercing studio with certified professionals.
  • The piercer begins by thoroughly disinfecting the piercing area. The skin must be cleaned both externally and internally (don’t worry, it’s not disgusting).
  • The piercer holds your lip with forceps. A needle is inserted with a quick prick, followed by a jewelry piece, and then locked into place. It’s very quick!

How long does it take for a Madonna piercing to heal?

Be aware that your lip can be swollen for a few days after getting your Madonna piercing. Other than that, this piercing only requires normal aftercare.

Your new Madonna piercing will take approximately 3-4 months to heal, and during that time, you should avoid changing jewelry as much as possible.

It is, however, customary to change the size of the labret rod once the initial swelling has subsided. This typically settles after a few days.
