Jewelry Care

We think of piercing jewelry as an extension of your personality, and we want them to last you a long time. Our wares are durable, but why not follow this jewelry care guide and protect the little beauties?

General care

Special care and regular servicing can help safeguard your piece's longevity and luster over time. Here are some general tips:

  • Clean your jewelry gently with a soft, non abrasive and chemical-free cloth.
  • Store your jewelry in a jewelry box to keep it away from sunlight.
  • If you take off your jewelry for long periods of time, be aware that your piercing can close up.

How to clean your jewelry

Like any treasure, your favorite eye-catchers need good care to stay shiny and keep turning those heads. Regular cleaning even extends their lifetime so you can enjoy their magic for years to come.

Here’s how to clean your jewelry:

  • Use an untreated microfiber cloth, making sure it has no chemicals (many kinds of jewelry polishing cloths are impregnated with anti-tarnish agents).
  • Get into all corners of your jewelry, always remember to be gentle (your jewelry deserves love).
  • Do not use alcohol, acid, chlorine, or other chemicals.

Store your jewelry in a box

A jewelry box helps organize your collection and can even make for a neat display. But it’s not just for show - it’s a lifesaver! A box will:

  • Protect your jewelry from sunlight, heat, moisture, and limit air exposure.
  • Keep your jewelry from moving around and scratching each other.
  • If you bought your jewelry from Bodymod, we suggest that you store it in the flat bags to protect them further. Plus it will be easier to identify each of them by the QR code, cool, isn't it?

How to open piercing jewelry

Last but surely not least, your tender love should also go into how you use the jewelry. What a shame it would be to mishandle a clean, well-stored gem when you try to put it on. Make sure you:

  • Know the specific lock type and how it opens.
  • Always use a soft touch - your fingers don’t know their own strength.

Special care

Each kind of material behaves differently. We want to ensure the very best care and use of your collection, so please read the guides below that are relevant to you.

14k gold strikes the middle ground between purity and resistance. Still, it’s a little softer than other materials and needs extra gentleness.

Clean your jewelry with care to keep up its luster for years and years.

Titanium is the sturdiest of our piercing materials. It’s also heat resistant, so you can wear it comfortably without the jewelry getting too hot.

Be aware, titanium is so strong that you must take off your jewelry when physically active, like playing sports, to protect yourself in case of pressure on your piercing. If you still want to look dazzling during sports (which we totally get), you can wear PTFE.

Surgical steel does not lose its shine when sterilized, and it does not rust. That means you can worry less about exposing your jewelry to alcohol or damp weather.

However, surgical steel easily gets cold, so store your jewelry at room temperature (let’s say that as long as you don’t put it in the fridge, all is good).

Acrylic, or plexiglass, is a plastic material, and while it’s very flexible, it’s also porous. You need to be careful not to crack your jewelry when putting it on or taking it off.

Acrylic will succumb to alcohol as well as temperatures of 80°C and above, so you must not try to sterilize it yourself.

These materials are almost identical. They’re both highly flexible, especially PTFE, and allow you to wear your jewelry even when playing sports.

PTFE and bioplast are also safe to use and even to keep in your body during medical procedures such as x-rays, CT- and MRI-scans. Pretty cool, right?

These materials can be cleaned by autoclaving.

Jewelry made of wood, bone, or horn is easy to clean due to the smooth, polished surface. Just use a cloth or brush. You must not use water, or the jewelry can expand and eventually dry up and crack. Keep your jewelry firm by rubbing it regularly with organic oil, such as jojoba.

Likewise, you must not wear these materials when bathing or sweating. Store your jewelry box in dry conditions.

Glass jewelry can be cleaned with alcohol or simply detergent and water. Use a microfiber cloth to wipe it. Do not store your jewelry before it is completely dry.

If your jewelry has stones, use extra care when cleaning them. Use a cloth to wipe them clean, and store them in dry conditions.

Our stones are well-fitted, but remember to be delicate with them.
